Jewish Life in Germany, the Region, and the City of Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth is helping us to remember, and fill gaps in our knowledge.

In 2021, Jewish people have meanwhile been recorded as living on the territory of present-day Germany for 1,700 years. A nationwide year of remembrance (https://2021jlid.de/) has been initiated to mark this occasion.

The aim of the commemorative year is to make Jewish life visible and tangible for everyone. The Bavarian universities have been called upon by Dr. Ludwig Spaenle (https://www.antisemitismusbeauftragter.bayern.de/) to participate by organizing their own events related to Jewish everyday culture in the past and present.

In Bayreuth and the region, we can build on a rich and lively tradition and documentation. For this reason, there will be a variety of contributions to the Year of Remembrance here, which are being prepared in close cooperation with the City, the University and the Jewish Community of Bayreuth. Interested parties can look forward to a variety of different formats and diverse channels of communication that will contribute to raising awareness of Jewish life as an integral part of our society. 

In addition to academic events and a keynote public event, the programme will include various formats that deliberately address an interested public both inside and outside the University, with information prepared in a generally understandable way. We can look forward to lectures within the established "Bayreuther Stadtgespräche" series of talks, a lecture series, workshops, a weekly series in the local newspaper in cooperation with the Nordbayerischer Kurier, an app, etc.
